What does a volcanic eruption in Europe, snow storms in Europe, and snow storms in the United States all have in common?

They are natural events that ground airplanes and paralyze transportation.

What does every Western nation have besides the United States that allows them to get around this?

Highspeed Rail.

Good thing Obama and the Democratic congress has an big expansion of highspeed rail. Volcanoes can erupt, snow can fall but the trains still move.

With the shrinking supply of oil The United States has no choice but to look into alternatives in energy and transportation. And while I love an airplane flight we'd better not put all of our eggs into one basket.

It's a true shame that Lexington isn't on this grid... yet.

  1. OK, I just have to say that I've taken European rail during a snowstorm. It was a mess.

Don't get me wrong; I'm all for high-speed rail, and I lived in Europe for years. I'd love to see some serious commitment to rail infrastructure here in the States.

But let's not generalize that rail travel is never affected by the weather. It can be, and sometimes is.

  2. You're telling me that a snowstorm stopped a highspeed train?

I might be biased, as my dad rode a freight train for 30 years and nothing could stop a freight train.

  3. When I was a kid, (1948-)there were passenger trains that came all the way to Lynch, Kentucky in the far southeastern corner of the state. This was common. How sad we didn't make a commitment then to rail.
